Which version do I book?
TCF Canada vs TCF Québec, and TEF Canada vs TEFAQ: Which Test Do You Need?
The two French tests each come in a Canada version and a Québec version. They look almost the same, but they are not accepted by the same government. For Express Entry, IRCC accepts only TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Québec accepts the Québec versions and the Canada versions for its own programs. If you are not sure which path you will use, the Canada version is the safer choice.
The short answer
Which Version Should You Book?
| Your plan | Book this | Do not book |
|---|---|---|
| Express Entry (permanent residence through IRCC) | TEF Canada or TCF Canada, all four skills | TCF Québec, TEF Québec (TEFAQ), TCF tout public, TEF IRN |
| A Québec immigration program (for example the PSTQ) | TCF Québec or TEF Québec, or TCF Canada or TEF Canada | A test from a centre not approved by the test provider |
| Not sure yet, or you may apply to both | TEF Canada or TCF Canada, all four skills | A Québec version, because IRCC will not accept it for Express Entry |
| France (residence permit or French nationality) | TEF IRN or another test France accepts | TEF IRN for Canada: it is built for France |
IRCC (Express Entry). IRCC's language testing page lists two approved French tests: TEF Canada and TCF Canada. No other French test is on the list. Your results must be less than 2 years old when you complete your profile and again when you apply. Source: IRCC, Language testing for Express Entry, page modified October 16, 2026, checked November 2, 2026.
Québec (MIFI). For the Québec Skilled Worker Selection Program (PSTQ), Québec's immigration ministry accepts the TCF-Québec, TCF-Canada, TCF, TEFAQ, TEF Canada and TEF, plus the DELF and DALF diplomas. Results must be two years old or less on the date you apply, and only results issued by the test providers count. Source: Gouvernement du Québec, PSTQ: knowledge of French, last updated November 28, 2025, checked November 2, 2026.
Each Québec program sets its own rules: which skills you must test and the level you need. Check the page for your program on Québec.ca before you book. Rules can change, so check again just before you apply.
France Éducation international
TCF Canada vs TCF Québec
Both tests are run by France Éducation international and use the same four types of task. The difference is who accepts the result and how many tests you must take.

|---|---|---|
| Accepted by IRCC for Express Entry | Yes | No (not on IRCC's list) |
| Accepted by Québec (PSTQ) | Yes | Yes |

TCF tout public (often written just "TCF") is the general version of the test. Québec lists it for the PSTQ, but IRCC does not list it for Express Entry. If your booking page does not say TCF Canada, it is not the test IRCC accepts.
Le français des affaires
TEF Canada vs TEF Québec (TEFAQ)
Le français des affaires (CCI Paris Île-de-France) now calls the TEFAQ TEF Québec. You will see both names. The tasks are the same as in the TEF Canada. Again, the difference is who accepts it and how many tests you take.
| TEF Canada | TEF Québec (TEFAQ) | |
|---|---|---|
| Accepted by IRCC for Express Entry | Yes | No. Le français des affaires says IRCC does not recognise it for immigration to Canada |
| Accepted by Québec | Yes. Le français des affaires says MIFI recognises TEF Canada for immigration to Québec | Yes, recognised by MIFI since 2006 |
| Which tests | All four for immigration, taken on the same day | 1, 2, 3 or 4 tests, depending on your Québec program. Each test can be taken on its own |

TEF IRN is a different test for France: residence permits and French nationality. It is shorter (for example, 20 reading questions in 30 minutes) and is scored out of 349. It is not on IRCC's list for Express Entry. Source: Le français des affaires, TEF IRN, checked November 2, 2026.
Before you pay
How to Avoid Booking the Wrong Test
- 1Decide where the result goes. IRCC (Express Entry), Québec (MIFI), or both. If there is any chance you will use Express Entry, book TEF Canada or TCF Canada.
- 2Read the exact test name on the booking page. Many centres offer several versions on the same page. Look for the word Canada in the name. "TCF", "TCF Québec", "TEF Québec" and "TEF IRN" are not accepted for Express Entry.
- 3Book all four skills for Express Entry. A Québec booking with only listening and speaking will not give you a full result for IRCC.
- 4For TEF Canada, take every test on the same day. Le français des affaires says all tests must be taken on the same day for the certificate to be recognised by Canadian authorities.
- 5Ask the centre to confirm by email which version you are booked on before you pay. Registration fees are usually not refunded if you change your mind.
- 6Plan for the two-year limit. Both IRCC and Québec want results that are recent on the day you apply. See how long results are valid.

Questions
TCF Canada vs TCF Québec, and TEF Canada vs TEFAQ FAQ
Can I use the TCF Québec or TEFAQ for Express Entry?
No. IRCC's Express Entry page lists only TEF Canada and TCF Canada as approved French tests (page modified October 16, 2026, checked November 2, 2026). Le français des affaires also says the TEF Québec (TEFAQ) is not recognised by IRCC for immigration to Canada.
Can I use TCF Canada or TEF Canada for a Québec program?
For the PSTQ, yes: Québec's immigration ministry lists both TCF-Canada and TEF Canada as accepted (page last updated November 28, 2025, checked November 2, 2026). Each Québec program has its own rules, so check the page for your program.
Is the TCF Québec easier than the TCF Canada?
Neither is officially easier. They use the same task types. The TCF Québec lets you take only the tests your Québec program asks for, which can mean a shorter test day.
What is the difference between TCF Canada and TCF tout public?
TCF tout public is the general version of the TCF. IRCC does not list it for Express Entry; you need the TCF Canada. Québec does list the general TCF for the PSTQ.
What about Canadian citizenship?
This guide is about immigration. For citizenship, IRCC's language proof page names TEF Canada and TCF Canada (page modified September 26, 2025, checked November 2, 2026): [IRCC, citizenship language proof](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/become-canadian-citizen/eligibility/language-proof/step-2.html). If you hold a Québec version, ask IRCC before you rely on it.
I already booked the wrong version. What can I do?
Contact your test centre as soon as possible and ask if they can move you to the right version. Registration is usually firm and fees are often kept, so ask before the test day, not after.
