Express Entry French Draw #450: CRS 435, 5,000 Invitations
On October 16, 2026, IRCC held its first French-language proficiency round in 58 days, inviting 5,000 candidates with a CRS cutoff of 435. That is 53 points higher than the previous French draw (#437, 382) and the highest French cutoff since September 2025. Here is what changed and what it means if you are working towards NCLC 7.
IRCC round #450
Draw #450 at a Glance
IRCC named the round "French-Language proficiency 2026-Version 2", the same category label as draw #437. It was open to candidates in the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades Program who met the category's French requirement.
Tie-breaking rule: candidates with exactly 435 points were invited only if they had submitted their Express Entry profile before October 6, 2026 at 21:31:22 UTC.
| Draw | Date | Invitations | CRS cutoff |

| #450 | 2026-10-16 | 5,000 | 435 |
| #437 | 2026-08-19 | 5,000 | 382 |
| #433 | 2026-08-06 | 5,000 | 391 |
Analysis
Why the Cutoff Jumped 53 Points
IRCC doesn't explain individual cutoffs, but the timing points to the most likely reason. From July 9 to August 19 there were four French draws in six weeks, each inviting 5,000 candidates, and the cutoff fell from 420 to 382. Then IRCC paused French rounds for 58 days, the longest gap of 2026. During a pause, new French-speaking candidates keep entering the pool and scores keep rising, so the first draw afterwards tends to land higher.
IRCC's pool data shows the same pressure across Express Entry. Between August 16 and October 12, profiles scoring 401–450 grew from 60,631 to 63,528, and the 431–440 band, where this cutoff fell, grew from 13,229 to 13,474. These counts cover every candidate in the pool, not only those eligible for French rounds.
In 2026 so far, French cutoffs have ranged from 382 to 435. A single high draw after a long pause is not a trend; watch the next one or two rounds before changing your plans.
Context
French Draws vs Other Express Entry Rounds
Even at 435, the French cutoff stayed well below most other rounds IRCC held between August 19 and October 16:
| Round | Category | Invitations | CRS cutoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| #450 | French-language proficiency (Oct 16) | 5,000 | 435 |
| #449 | Canadian Experience Class (Oct 15) | 2,500 | 519 |
| #448 | Provincial Nominee Program (Oct 13) | 752 | 772 |
| #447 | Trades occupations (Oct 1) | 3,500 | 476 |
| #441 | Healthcare and social services (Sep 4) | 3,500 | 475 |
| #444 | Senior managers with Canadian experience (Sep 16) | 250 | 389 |
A Canadian Experience Class candidate needed 519 the day before this round; a French-eligible candidate needed 435. For many people that 84-point difference is more than they could gain any other way.

What This Draw Means for You
To be invited in a French-language round you need NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities (reading, listening, writing and speaking) on TEF Canada or TCF Canada. French also adds up to 50 CRS points in every round: 25 points with NCLC 7+ in all four French abilities, or 50 if you also have CLB 5+ in all four English abilities.
- 1Already NCLC 7 in all four? Make sure your French results are entered in your Express Entry profile and still valid (IRCC accepts results for two years from the test result date).
- 2Close to NCLC 7? Convert your last scores with the NCLC calculator and find the weakest skill. One skill below NCLC 7 makes you ineligible for French rounds.
- 3Not tested yet? Compare TEF Canada and TCF Canada, then check dates at test centres in Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver, Calgary or Ottawa. Results can take a few weeks.
