Eligibility

Who Is Eligible for French-Language Draws?

To be invited in a French-language proficiency round, you need French test results (TEF Canada or TCF Canada) showing at least NCLC 7 in all four abilities — reading, listening, writing and speaking — plus the requirements IRCC publishes with each round.

French also earns additional CRS points whatever the round: 25 points with NCLC 7+ in all four French abilities and CLB 4 or lower (or no test) in English, or 50 points with CLB 5+ in all four English abilities.

Strategy

Why French Draws Matter for Your CRS Score

Since December 2024, French-language cutoffs have ranged from 379 to 481. If your score sits in that range, reaching NCLC 7 in French can matter as much as any other factor you can still change.

  1. 1Convert your current or target scores with the NCLC calculator.
  2. 2Find your weakest skill — the category requires NCLC 7 in all four, so one weak skill blocks you.
  3. 3Pick a test: compare TEF Canada and TCF Canada formats, then book early.
  4. 4Practise under exam conditions with the free TEF or TCF practice test.
