How to Book the TCF Canada Exam: Step-by-Step
You do not book the TCF Canada with one central website. You book it through a test centre approved to run it, and each centre sets its own dates, fee, deadlines and rules. This guide shows the steps, what to compare between centres, what to bring on the day, and the booking mistakes that cost people a session.
The basics
How Booking Works
IRCC says you must schedule your test with an agency approved by IRCC and pay the costs yourself. For the TCF Canada, that means a centre that offers the TCF Canada version of the test. Many are Alliance Française branches, but not all.
Because the centre is in charge, two people can get very different answers to the same question. In October 2026, the centres we looked at gave different fees, different result times and different refund rules (see the table below). Always trust the page of the centre you are booking with.
Registration windows open roughly every quarter, and busy centres can sell out weeks ahead; check your centre's page for its next window.
Frenchly is not affiliated with any test centre or with France Éducation international. Fees, dates and rules change often. This page reflects public centre pages we read in October 2026.
Step by step
The Booking Steps
- 1Confirm you need the TCF Canada. For Express Entry you need the Canada version, not another TCF variant. If you are still choosing between tests, read TEF vs TCF Canada first.
- 2Count backward from your deadline. Add your preparation time, the wait for results and the time you need to update your profile. Results are valid for two years, so do not book far ahead of when you will use them. See how long results are valid.
- 3Make a short list of centres. Start with your city: Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver, Calgary or Ottawa. Also check a centre in a nearby city if its dates are earlier.
- 4Open each centre's official TCF Canada page. Note the fee, session dates, registration window, refund rule and result time. Some centres show most sessions as sold out, so check more than one.
- 5Register online during the registration window. Seats are limited. One Alberta centre says bookings cannot be made in person or by email, and that your registration is complete only after it receives both your form and your payment.
- 6Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID. The name on your registration must match the identity document you bring.
- 7Watch for the confirmation email. One centre says it sends instructions at the latest one week before the exam. If nothing arrives, check spam and then contact the centre.
- 8Plan the day. Know the address, the arrival time and what ID you need, and do a final practice run the week before.
What differs
What to Compare Between Centres
This is a snapshot of what three centres published when we checked in October 2026. It is not a price list. It shows why you should read each page.
| Point | Edmonton centre | Calgary centre | San Francisco centre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full TCF Canada fee | $400 | $400 | $460 |
| Result timing | 1 to 2 weeks by email, except December and August | Within 6 weeks, by email | Not stated on the page |
| Refund or change | See the centre's terms | No refund or deferment | Time of exam cannot be changed |
| Retake wait | 20 days after your last attempt | At least 20 days between two takes | Not stated on the page |
Fees can also differ by country and by what is included, so compare the total you will actually pay, plus travel. Check the currency shown on the centre's page.
- Session dates. Some centres run only a few sessions a month, so the nearest date may be weeks away.
- Result time. If you are racing a deadline, a centre that emails results in one to two weeks is very different from one that says up to six weeks.
- Refund and change rules. If you may need to move your date, avoid a centre with no refund or deferment unless you are sure.
- Format. Some centres run the test on computers. San Francisco's page says its exam is digital and that a tutorial is given on the day.
- Re-evaluation. One Alberta centre states that TCF score re-evaluations are unavailable as of 1 September 2026 until further notice. Ask before you assume you can appeal a score.
What you are booking
What You Are Booking: All Four Skills
The TCF Canada covers all four skills. At the San Francisco centre, the page says the full exam is the only option and all four parts are mandatory. The test has 39 reading questions, 39 listening questions, 3 writing tasks and 3 speaking tasks.
Because French bonus points depend on every ability, one weak skill can hold back your whole result. Practise all four before you book. Use our TCF reading and listening tips, writing examples and speaking guide, then try the free TCF practice test.
Before you go
ID, Arrival and Exam-Day Rules
- Bring the ID you registered with. One Alberta centre says you will not be admitted without the ID you used on the registration form.
- Check how many IDs you need. Another Alberta centre asks for two valid pieces of ID, each with your photo, such as a passport, permanent resident card or driver's licence. Centres differ, so confirm yours.
- Do not arrive late. One centre says arriving after the exam officially begins means no entry, and another asks you to arrive 15 minutes before your first exam.
- Expect rare cancellations. One centre warns that technical problems can lead to last-minute cancellations. Check what it covers before you buy a flight or hotel.
After the test
After the Exam: Results and Your Profile
Your centre sends your result in its own time frame. When you enter results in your Express Entry profile, IRCC may ask for your certificate number and your test PIN, so keep the certificate safe. Convert your scores with the NCLC calculator to see an estimate; only the official certificate and IRCC's tables count.
If you need to retake, check the waiting period. The two Alberta centres we read state a minimum of 20 days between attempts, but confirm with your own centre. If you score lower than you hoped, review how results expiry works before deciding on timing.
Avoid these
Common Booking Mistakes
- Waiting for a date to appear. Sessions can be sold out early. Look at several centres and note when each opens its registration window.
- Not reading the refund rule. A centre with no refund or deferment will not move you if your plans change.
- Paying only part of the process. Your registration may not be complete until the form and payment both reach the centre.
- Booking the wrong version. Make sure the page says TCF Canada.
- Name mismatch. A name that differs from your ID can mean you are refused at the door.
- Booking too close to your deadline. Allow for the result time and for a possible retake.
Questions
How to Book the TCF Canada Exam FAQ
Can I book the TCF Canada directly on the France Éducation international website?
No. You register through a test centre that offers the TCF Canada. The centre sets the dates, the fee and the registration steps, so check its official page.
How much does the TCF Canada cost?
It depends on the centre. In October 2026, two Alberta centres listed $400 for the full exam and a San Francisco centre listed $460. Check the centre you plan to use.
How long do TCF Canada results take?
It depends on the centre. One Edmonton page says one to two weeks by email, except in December and August, and a Calgary page says within six weeks. Ask your centre before you plan around a deadline.
How soon can I retake the TCF Canada?
The two Alberta centres we checked state at least 20 days between attempts. Confirm the rule with your own centre before you book a second date.
Can I take only one skill?
For Express Entry you need results for all four abilities. At least one centre states that all four parts of the TCF Canada are mandatory, so plan to sit the full exam.
How long are my results valid?
IRCC requires language results to be less than 2 years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and again when you submit your application. See the results validity guide for timing examples.
